In a recent display of compassion, Luke Dyson recently stepped into the ring, not just for personal victory but to champion the fight against cancer. Motivated by the recent diagnosis of his best friend Jak Anderson’s father, Frank Anderson, Luke chose to use his fight in the ‘Immortal Fighting Championships’ on September 23rd at Halifax Boxing Club to raise both funds and awareness for Macmillan Cancer Support on behalf of his friend and friend’s dad.
Dyson announced this heartfelt gesture on Facebook on August 31st, 2023, emphasising the importance of remembering one’s roots and returning favours whenever possible. The funds raised were dedicated to raise money in awareness of Frank’s fight against cancer and contributing to Macmillan Cancer Support. Luke’s personal connection, shaped by his mother’s recent triumph over cancer earlier this year, infused a deep and sincere sentiment into this good deed for one of his closest friends.
Stepping into the ring at the ‘Immortal Fighting Championships,’ Dyson exhibited his MMA skills at the Halifax Boxing Club against a seasoned pro. The explosive event treated the fans in Halifax present to more than 20 exhilarating fights, with a mix of rules, weights and age-divisions.
Post-fight, Dyson shared on Facebook, “It felt like I broke my nose, I threw some kicks, took some kicks. Win or lose, the most important thing always is that both fighters go home safe and sound. Plus, today was about raising money for charity on behalf of a friend and for me to do my bit in the fight for cancer. A special shoutout to Danny Turton from Immortal and Halifax Boxing Club for giving us the platform to contribute to a good cause. Massive thanks to everyone who also donated and pitched in. Jak, his dad, his family, and I truly appreciate it all, so thank you.”
In summary, this event wasn’t just about landing punches; for Dyson, it was about raising awareness and landing a knockout blow to cancer. Driven by compassion and a personal connection to the fight against cancer, Dyson transformed the ring into a platform for awareness and fundraising, raising more than £400 on the night.
His dedication to raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, in honour of his best friend Jak Anderson’s father, Frank Anderson, who is currently fighting cancer resonated deeply with me. Although I had been supporting Dyson by liking his posts when he had been fighting, Dyson was more a friend of a friend who I hadn’t seen for around 10 years. He re-entered my awareness in a more meaningful way when I initially encountered his Facebook post on 31st of August about him fundraising for charity on behalf of Jak’s dad fight for cancer. Right from the opening sentence of Dyson’s Facebook post, Luke’s message was crystal clear: “Never forget where you came from, never ever forget who was there and if life ever presents a opportunity to return the favour, even in the smallest ways you do it.”
Dyson’s genuine act of kindness showed me exactly what type of person he was! Inspired by his generosity and kind nature by offering to do something nice for a friend out of the goodness of his own heart, I decided I was going to surprise Dyson back and create him a new logo and professional website for his fighting career, free-of-charge with no hidden strings, or cost to him at all. Seeing Dyson surprise a friend with a good deed motivated me to do a good deed in return as well. Not only that, but on the same day I decided I was going to surprise him, something lucky happened back to me, showing that good deeds pay off and it’s good to be kind whenever you can.
